"Sproutman's Kitchen Garden Cookbook" is a great all-purpose book for anyone new to sprouts and sprouting and for the sprout vetran who is looking for more recipes and ideas. The tone is chatty and humourous. The book is a great read cover to cover, but it can also be read a section at a time, in any order.
I received this book as a gift and almost immediately I had trays and bags of sprouts in my kitchen. We've stopped putting lettuce on sandwiches and use various sprouts. Sprouts on salad, in stir-fry, in soup... I've tried several of the recipes with success. The sprout bread is really popular and so are the crunchy sprouts.
One word of caution: sprout bread has neither the flavour nor the texture of bakery bread. It is better. ... Read More

This book about growing plants indoors follows Sonia Day's highly regarded book The Urban Gardener: How to Grow Things Successfully on Balconies, Terraces, Decks. Growing plants indoors is a much more limited topic and unfortunately this is a much more limited book.

The book starts with descriptions of some 20 easy-to-grow indoor plants such as dracaena and croton and some plants that are better avoided. It describes how to grow amaryllis, herbs and African violets, how to treat holiday plants and how to force bulbs. It goes on to discuss the importance of the correct level of light, tips for watering, growing plants from seed and dealing with plant pests and diseases. There is really nothing here that is new or original and there ... Read More

This an important work for those concerned with garden design. There are many examples of the Mediterranean Style, with emphasis on French, Italian, and Californian interpretations. The volume is light on text and heavy on pictures (and they are of exceptional quality). At times, the captions neglect to inform the reader of the dominant plant's identity. This is a good introductory volume for the hobbyist and would be a valuable tool for designers to use with clients to clarify and illustrate the style. Great advocacy for use of drought tolerant plants.

I love to garden and always hated our long, dreary winters. This book looks at gardening during the "off season" and argues (successfully) that it doesn't have to be off-putting at all! Now, I look outside and I see things differently. I never realized the beauty that already exists in my frosty backyard and now I know ways to improve upon it. Who would have thought that we in the cold zones could have winter containers outdoors?

This is a good book for people planning new gardens because it highlights some important considerations, for folks who like to decorate and be crafty (there's a couple of projects outlined), and to give grumpy northern gardeners something to smile about during their 4 - 6 months of winter.

I don't know what the above reviewer expected...by way of clarification; bamboos are grasses, and agapanthus are herbaceous perennials NOT shrubs or trees. If you are expecting to find a comprehensive acount of all warm climate plants this is not the book for you (as the title clearly states)

If you are someone who is looking for a good primary survey of trees and shrubs for this zone this is an extremely useful book. Professional and non-professional alike. It may not have every esoteric specie but it will serve as a solid foundation of what performs best.
