| This is a multi-purpose book: it will teach you how to plan your yard and garden based on permaculture principles, how to create a community within your neighbourhood, how to be an activist through plants, and so much more. It is highly inspiring and also practical. Some of the ideas might seem a little wacky at first, but you don't have to do it all at once. At the very least, you should come away understanding how pointless and wasteful a lawn is when you could be saving the soil, growing food and creating beauty. |

| I am a big advocate on using plants to create green walls and roofs. They can reduce the urban "heat island" effect and create usable green open spaces. I found this book's discussions on Intensive Green Roof, Extensive Green Roof, Ecoroof, Brown Roof, etc interesting. This book is a serious attempt on a difficult subject. The color photos inside the book are helpful also.
There are still technical difficulties in using green walls and roofs: water proofing, how to handle the structural weight of large trees, how to integrate large plants with building structure, etc. All these technical discussions are needed, and they could be the subject of another book. | A late "bloomer" in the gardening world (at almost 63 years of age), I've read lots of books on the subject, mostly to educate myself on the somewhat complex botanical terminology and also to not appear too "green" when in the presence of avid gardeners.
Through Amazon, I came across Liz Primeau's "Front Yard Gardens: Growing More Than Grass", a book I can sum up in one word...WOW! I read it cover to cover and enjoyed every single story and especially the beautiful photography, page after page. | Looking at Tasha Tudor's Garden is like taking a journey to another century, surrounded by beauty and peace. Tasha herself wears 19th century clothes, including petticoats, shawls, and head kerchiefs and lives in an antique-appearing house, going about her life with what seems to be a minimal of technology. The photographs that capture her seeing to the goats in the barn in winter, carrying a basket of hand-pulled weeds in summer, arranging lillies, tulips, peonies and old roses in her lovely old house, and seeing the cottage gardens in bloom are absolutely gorgeous.
