This is a monster of a book. You will not be able to read it in one sitting. Carla does cover her material very well, but in an easy to read way that makes you want it to be shorter so you CAN read it at one time. She does put quite a bit of herself into it. You will discover she is a christian. You will find out that she had seven children. And you will also find out there are three ways to make hominy. That pigs wil distroy almost any fencing. And perhaps you might discover why this book became her life's work with its constant revisions and additions.

I improved my yields by applying better nutrient standards, cleaner environments and totally changed my strain type around for a change that resulted in about a 45% increase in flowers without leaf. The calyx to leaf ratio was a subject on another book of this author who has been shown to be a very consistant contributor to cannabis research. This is his grow entry and it is a layman's book. It covers results from possible hermaphrodite conditions and investigates methods of keeping grow room smells tight while making sure the best of your buds get the most light with tying and pruning information. I would say get this book in a heartbeat and remember that it is all for a good cause. I would never complain about something that gives you so much ... Read More

Whether you're a plant collector or an avid gardener, or both as I am, this book is worth its weight in gold (and it weighs a lot). Dirr's work is indispensable. I like to collect plants, including rare and unusual plants and I like to start woody plants from seed. This manual takes the mystery out of guessing what the plants' needs are and exactly what conditions are required for sowing seeds. I even find myself reading about some old favorites (like American Elm, Sugar Maple, Red Oak, etc.) and learning new things. I've only had this manual for a few weeks and I've already got many pages marked with "stickies" and highlighted many passages and even made notes in the margins. You don't even miss the pictures.

On the whole, this book is interesting and informative, but I was slightly disappointed with the logical layout. The information in the book is fairly detailed and interesting, but is presented in a narrative manner. The book takes a season/habitat based approach... I guess I was expecting a more trait-based heirarchical listing system. Something that would facilitate taking an unknown plant and quickly looking up the answers to "what is it? is it edible? is it medicinal? if so, what are the details"

The approach also tends to give details on a few interesting / especially good flavored or nutricious plants and then gives a names-only grocery list of "Edible and medicinal plants" and then one of "For Observation only"

So, in summary, ... Read More

I bought this after seeing it as one of the few books offered by Vesseys Seeds (vesseys.com). (It was listed at[money] - lucky for me I often comparison shop.) Many propagation books contain information on seed starting, but because this one concentrates on seed propagation, it has more room to expand on the topic and gives more than books that have to save space to discuss other techniques like cuttings, dividing, layering etc. It discusses seed saving plant by plant, and contained an entry for nearly every plant I looked up.

Although the bulk of the material contained in this book could be found online, it's still a worthwhile purchase. Indeed, it is a must have. The purchase price of the book will be quickly regained in the money you will save making your own compost rather than purchasing bagged compost or synthetic fertiliser.

A few of the chapters are more interesting than useful to the home gardener. For instance, one of the early chapters discusses the history of composting beginning with the ancient Akkadians. The final chapter discusses managing large scale compost operations (by large scale, I mean tens and hundreds of tons of waste) on the farm or as part of a municipal waste management strategy.

The core of the book, however, is very directly ... Read More
