| I purchased this book while I was doing the literature review for my PhD; it had been a few years since I had taken a calculus class, and I was coming across quite a few mathematical models in my review. This book was invaluable in refreshing my memory about calculus. The book was written very clearly and in a logical manner. |

| This is an absolute must-have if you have any interest walking. Even if you have no interest in walking you can't fail to be taken in by the consistently detailed drawings and conversational prose. Each and every page contains the most beautiful pen drawn maps, views and very accurate drawings of the Lakeland fells themselves. Further, Wainwright takes the reader through each fell climb in his own handwriting which, startlingly, justifies to both margins with not a hyphenated word in sight - a feat in itself which I've not seen elsewhere. Perhaps I'm impressed because I'm a graphic designer but I really don't see how anyone could be disappointed with this fascinating book. |

| This is the 5th book of a series of 7 which were written between 1956 and 1965. The series covers the entire Lake District. This book covers the area north of Keswick and includes Skiddaw, Blencathra and the Caldbeck Fells. My reasons for recommending the book are as follows: 1. The author is an expert. He has covered the ground, and the information in the book is a small selection of his total knowledge. 2. The guide is accurate. Minor changes have of course happened in the 40 plus years since publication, such as the disappearance of the railway. But the fells are the same. | I did the Coast to Coast walk back in '89 (in baking hot weather) and again - partly - in '96 (in pouring rain). Up to this day the memory of this walk remains with me as vividly as ever and I consider that forthnight as the most wonderful two weeks in my life. AW learnt me to appreciate the North English Countryside with its quiet villages and open spaces, its desolate moorlands and austere fells. Furthermore, I consider this guide a little gem because of the hand drawn illustrations, maps and (witty) narrative. I mean - who hand-writes a book?

| This is an astonishingly good revision of the classic guide, which I have used for many years. If you're going to use it 'in anger' it's to be preferred to the original edition.
In a sense, Chris Jesty does himself an injustice, because his new material is spliced in so incredibly well with Wainwright's, both in style and in lettering, that it's often only when you look at the original that you realise that it actually is new material. Also, the quality of the reproduction is excellent - better, as far as I can see, than that of the later printings of the first edition The same comments apply to the revised 'Central Fells', and, on the strength of these excellent volumes, I have ordered the other two. |
