I have just borrowed this from the library. I found it an interesting and easy-to-read book and the short 'chapters' on each garden are great for busy gardeners on a tea break, as it stops you reading too much at once! However, I found the lack of photos disappointing, especially as Don would sometimes explain at length how a particular planting scheme or garden area was so effective...but the only photo would be of something else! And like many other 'celebrity' books, an irritatingly large number of views were obscured by Monty in the foreground! I haven't seen the accompanying tv series, so it might perhaps be a more satisfying read if you have seen the gardens on screen. It's well worth reading, and I might possibly buy it in the future, ... Read More

I like this book. It looks good, it's interesting to read and seems to have all the "buy me" boxes ticked, but I wonder how much of it could really apply to the average back garden or allotment. I say this because Don uses his own garden as his example - his garden being a vast swathe of English countryside divided into various areas that themselves are larger than most people's gardens. With quotes such as, "the houses in my area are mainly built of oak" (page 14), and page after page of photographs showing Don in one of his many extensive gardens, he makes no effort to identify with his potential readers.

To expand on this a little, Don's Lime Walk (a leafy avenue of lime trees) is so large that he uses a gantry on a trailer to tend ... Read More

I picked up this book last night intending to have a casual flick through it.I then proceeded to read it cover to cover unable to put it down.Monty and Sarah Dons genuine love of nature and propensity for producing wonderfully simple dishes from their own fruit and veg is truly inspirational. The underlying theme to this book is :You dont have to be a gardening genius or own countless acres of land to produce great fruit and veg, anyone can do it.As a society we have become divorced from the practical production of what we consume, through ignorance we justify genetic engineering, factory farming and all manner of insecticides, pesticides, etc.Dont get me wrong im not anti-supermarket but if everyone who could grow something did just that then we would become ... 4.Growing Out of Trouble by: Montagu Don, Monty Don

Books : Growing Out of Trouble
I work with young people, i love growing vegatables and i enjoy reading so i was as happy as a pig in you know what with this book. I really loved the way he was very honest about his own struggles and about the challenges of working with heroin addicts. This is no fairy tale, everything didn't go as perfectly as he first thought it might. This was about real life heroes working with real people with real stories and the results were remarkable.

I am the world's worst gardener. I normally visit public gardens and end up feeling very depressed. Ditto watching gardening programmes. But I loved this book. It is so ... normal. There are no airs and graces, just a man and his wife making something from nothing and the various trials and tribulations along the way.
Intelligent, sensitive, funny, poignant - it is a book to dip into or read all in one go. I liked to take pot luck and open it at a random point to let the writing take me to a garden's season out of season as it were.
Photographs would have improved the book which is why I gave it four stars.

Books : The Jewel Garden
I was very sorry to hear of Monty Don's recent stroke and it was reading a newspaper article which gave some brief history of his life that led me to buy this book.

This book is essentially divided into two parts or themes. One is the story of how Monty and Sarah Don met and built a life together, which included building up a successful business - and how that business went wrong and it's impact on their lives, and the second theme is their love of gardening and the garden they built in their home.

The book will appeal to anyone who wants to know more about Monty Don as a person, and it will also appeal to those who have an interest in gardening. I would not describe it as an instructional gardening book, but more about a personal ... Read More

As a fan of Monty Don's writing and gardening I bought this, expecting that his style had probably been watered down (no pun intended!) for Gardeners World viewers. But not a bit of it. Monty happily gives us the low down on junk fruit and other evils of the twenty-first century. Entertaining and informative it is based around the Berryfield plot, so the chapters include the £20 border, the greenhouse, the kitchen garden, the pond, the lawn, the fruit garden and so on. Well worth the money.

8.The Sensuous Garden by: Montagu Don

Books : The Sensuous Garden
I bought this book on a whim; the pictures were beautiful, the idea of a garden book based on the senses of touch, smell, sight, taste and hearing seemed intriguing, and, besides, the price was a bagain. If this book is any indication, I must remember to buy more books on a whim.

When I closed the book, I was even more pleased with the concept and the pictures than I had thought. I've really come to look (and feel, hear, taste and smell) at gardens in a new way. And - the writing is a pure pleasure. Sentences like "Pastels. The very word is gentle. No army ever went to war in a fetching shade of pastels." and "Pink brings out the slut of orange." are simply quotable. When did you last feel like quoting, not just distributing the advice, from a garden ... Read More

Books : From the Garden to the Table: Growing, Cooking, and Eating Your Own Foods
This is a lovely book, well written and easy to read. I often pick it up and read a few pages, it makes me feel comfortable and cosy and keen to grow even more vegetables for our table.

The photographs are fabulous and anyone who already enjoys gardening will enjoy Monty sharing his thoughts and activities. And if you are not yet a keen gardener then you soon will be.

I thoroughly recommend this book, it would make a great gift.
