This book contains all the necessary information to make successful diagnoses for a wide range of plant problems.

Useful and useable for the amateur and professional alike, containing colour photos, detailed information on pests and diseases and lists of the most frequent and likely problems for a wide range of plants.

Also, this book is so much more affordable the the majority of plant pathology books which are aimed at a very specialist market and often deal with only insect pests or diseases. It even contains information on badgers and deer.

I am an amateur gardener without the scientific knowledge of the previous reviewers with whom I agree on the failure of the writer to live up to the high standard set by all those who have written for this series. Having seen his earlier appearances on TV gardening programmes I was somewhat forewarned and, true to form, his arrogance shines through. His prediction in his introduction that the book may be perceived as judgemental, dogmatic and opinionated is fully borne out.
Let's hope the book appreciates in value as its only other purpose is to fill a gap between No 101 and No 103.

7.Mushrooms and Toadstools (Collins GEM) by: Patrick Harding

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Mushrooms and Toadstools (Collins GEM)
All the Collins Gem books are great for keeping in your pocket if you are out on a field trip for the day and this one is no exception. The photographs are first class and the descriptions of the individual fungi clear and concise. The book describes almost 240 different species of mushroom and toadstool (when you've read the book you will know the difference). Their habitats, size, appearance and also whether they are poisonous or not.

They say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing and with fungi it could be fatal. The book goes out of its way to show which fungi are edible and which are poisonous. Personally I prefer to err on the side of caution and buy mine from the supermarket.

Books : Best Shade Plants
I have found this book invaluable in my own garden that has several shady areas including a long border where almost no direct sunlight ever falls. It gives suggestions for plants in all catagories, shrubs, bulbs, climbers, perennials etc. along with their soil conditions and how much shade they can tolerate or would like. It's earned its modest cover price several times over by avoiding mistakes and its one that my friends seem the most interested in if they see it when they come round.
