| I found this book very detailed and a pleasure to read. The chief exponents of the 'English Lanscape Garden' such as Hawksmoor, Vanbrugh, Kent, Pope, Temple, Bridgeman etc come to life and the political aspects to thier designs which are fundermental to our understanding of early 18th century gardens are made crystal clear. The narrative is very entertaining and full of interesting information. However, certain aspects of garden design in this transformational period seem to be neglected by Richardson as alsmost secondary or 'unimportant' to the developemnt of the English Landscape garden when in reality they were essential to not only thier development but the philosophy that underpinned them. | It is time the truth was told about Transylvania, and this book certainly tells the reader exactly that.
Marosvásárhely (targu mures), Kolozsvár (cluj), Nagyvárad (oradea) were all Hungarian (Magyar) cities, and indeed the whole of Transylvania is a Hungarian land that is now occupied by romania. The fact is that Hungarian Transylvania was Hungarian for over a thousand years, and it was only torn from Hungary in the Trianon Diktat of 1921. Romanians, please stop telling us that Transylvania isn't Hungarian, because historically speaking it is! | The author states in the prologue that he is the World's first confectionary historian. Well, he is certainly a delightful one and his book is written with such enthusiasm that I found myself almost able to taste the lovely sweets he described. If only it had been sold with free samples for each chapter! Tim Richardson has 'studied' (and munched upon) sweets from every part of the world and this book is just the most enjoyable way to share his journey. I'm going to try and track down some of the sweets he mentions, just so that I can share in his findings. I heartily recommend this book and hope to meet the author(would be let down if he isn't surrounded by bowls of sweets) at some book event. Somebody give ... Read More |
