| Anyone who knows anything of Murakmi's work should be aware that a book about running written by him won't just be a book about running. Short, but never slight, the book muses on many subjects from memory, to why he started writing, perfecting a swimming technique, to some of the best music to run to. All written in Murakmi's own distinctive voice.
Whatever he writes about this is Murakami's voice you're hearing. There is insight into the kind of person he is and also the kind of person runners are. There is plenty of running here and at times it does almost feel like the book has been written at the pace of a long run as its energy is brisk yet economical. | The first chapter is riveting, but then the narrative loses steam and, at first, I thought the book might be a series of short stories as sequential chapters bore no relation to one another. Eventually I began to see that the different characters were coming together. There are so many story-lines and characters that, although I read every day, I often had to stop and rack my brains as who a character was. As it turned out some of the characters were peripheral and I don't know why they were included as they just confuse the reader. By the last third of the book the pace quickens and, depending on an unbelievable number of coincidences, the threads come together.

I have to say straight away that this was not one of Philippa Gregory' best--a shame, since I was looking forward to reading it. | After reading Robert Harris's novel Pompeii I was keen on gaining more knowledge about both the people and the town that was overcome by the eruption of Vesuvius , so this books publication allowed me that opportunity.
The amount of information conveyed is awesome and the life of the various citizen's of Pompeii is truly bought to life , the book is written in a scholarly way as befits a Cambridge Don but in no way does this get in the way , she paint's a fantastic picture of the place and it's culture , organisation and politics as well as spicing thing's up by many reference's to the sexual liberation of the era. A very well written book and did everything I asked of it. |
