| I have an older edition of this book (1996 version), which is in one volume and is very bulky/heavy so I was delighted to see that the newer edition has been split into 2 volumes. Working in the Landscape design industry, I have found this book to be a valuable reference source since leaving college and the book has stood up to daily use in the office from myself and my colleagues for the past six years! The alphabetical listing (I'm presuming the new edition is the same) is very useful because you don't have to go to an index first. It gives a huge amount of information about each species and even a description of many variants and cultivars. | This is a terrific book devoted entirely to Cacti (no succulents are shown. The photographs are superb and many of them show plants in their natural habitat. Each plant description gives brief cultural requirements for the plant shown and these are qite adequate but this is not really what this book is all about. The book is a visual feast of photographs, many of the plants quite rare in cultivation. The book also uses what may be a unique form of layout, rather than the plants being shown in alphabetical order, they are classified according to their geographical origin. | I was looking for a complete encyclopedia of plants and flowers, not knowing much about either. This book is laid out in such a way that a non-expert can easily identify species. it is classified by size and colour of plant, for example, small blue flowers, large white flowered shrubs, trees, etc. The help given on where to plant, and caring for the plants is very useful. I rate it highly, especially as other reference works are classified alphabetically, which is no help at all for a beginner like me. |
