I am not a gardener, I have never watched gardeners world and have only a small back yard. i somehow came across this book while browsing amazon and thought it would be a nice stocking filler for my husband. anyhow, it is so easy to follow and inspiring that we now have green beans, leeks, onions and shallots growing in our little garden. The difference in taste from supermarket veg is unbelievable. This is a great book that takes you from buying seeds to taking vegetables out of the ground, if i can do it, anyone can! Next season we are moving on to courgettes, potatoes, broccoli........

I have found this to be an invaluable book which I have used together with the Fruit Expert by Dr Hessayon. The latter is in full colour and is probably a superior guide to choosing your fruit trees and bushes with descriptions, colour pictures and ratings of lots of varieties. The RHS book is aimed at the planting, pruning and care of your fruits once chosen (although it does have short descriptions of the more popular varieties but no pictures of them). This book is in black and white and one other colour but this doesn't really detract from the numerous beatiful drawings. It has comprehensive detail with illustrations on planting and long term care of your fruit trees/ bushes. In particular it has illustrations of pruning for each fruit and each year ... Read More

A wonderful little marvel of a gardening book which features descriptions and lovely photographs of all the plants you could possibly want to identify, buy or just wish to own. Its great for taking out in the garden and identifying what you already have and even better for taking to the garden centre with you to ensure you are buying the correct plant or shrub for your garden type, size, soil type etc.

Brilliant - just buy it, you wont regret it!

At a mere 80 pages long you could be forgiven for thinking this is a quick guide to hanging baskets...not so. This little book is stuffed to the gills with information from creating a basket, what materials/linings to use, through designing plantings and to where they should be placed. It even tells you exactly how many of each plant you will need to obtain the effects pictured...ideal for the less confident gardener. There are foliage baskets, flowering baskets, ones for spring, ones for summer, indoor baskets and so on.
If all that isn't enough, there is a guide to maintaining your plants, pricking out, taking cuttings and avoiding problems.
Filled with lovely colour pictures throughout, this book is of the standard you would expect from the ... Read More

This book is full of good information but it is quite boring and the format is outdated. I bought it for a horticultural course and while it is okay, I found no explainations for some of the techniques. But if you want to know how to do something - plant a tree or grow seeds, this will tell you. I think there are better books tho'
