Just what i was looking for in a book. For me a complete beginner in gardening i wanted my garden to be something out of the ordinary and this book is perfect, British gardens , British weather and British soils can be suited to alien plants and this books is a very good place to start , in planning and creating a little bit of the med in the UK .living in the West country this i thought this book was written for me.
Very pleasing book.

I think this book would be useful mostly to people who are complete newcomers to wildlife gardening and garden birdwatching. I would describe it as a field guide and gardening book in one - however, trying to fit all that much info into one small book does mean that something has to go to make space; which means if you already know a bit about birds and bird gardening then this won't be of much use. And there was no need for the photo of poor Mrs Blackbird being mauled by a cat!

In retrospect I would have been better off buying a more advanced book on wildlife gardening as I have more than enough bird ID books as it is. So if you are more at an intermediate level you might want to skip this book and go for something more in-depth ... Read More

186.Outdoors: The Garden Design Book for the Twenty-First Century by: Diarmuid Gavin, Terence Conran

Books : Outdoors: The Garden Design Book for the Twenty-First Century
It an interesting book and could have have been brilliant. However, there are some, in my opinion, fundamental errors with this book. It is too large, too heavy, unconnected and rather expensive in a competitive market.

Obsessive fans might be interested in the dialogue transcript of a conversation between Gavin and terrance at the front of the book, I was a bit mystified by it and was left wondering how much more of a contribution the two 'authors' made to the project. I have a huge respect for both designers, but didn't find the book to be a cohesive whole, more like a series of separate essays by individuals who only met up a few times when scheduling allowed.

The book could have had a lot to offer. There is a wide ... Read More

Another lusciously illustrated book drawing on the vast archives of Country Life and using the same format of earlier books drawing on the same archive (for example Kathryn Bradley-Hole's 2004 Lost Gardens of England). However by concentrating on the work of one designer Robin Whalley is able to combine a biography of his subject and the elements that made up his designs, with a rich review of the sites at which Peto worked. The biography in Section 1 is an excellent overview of the life and travels of Harold Peto, giving excerpts from his travel diaries, carefully illustrated by contemporary photographs of the sites Peto visited. A single sketch drawing from the diaries is reproduced, perhaps acting as a rather tantalising hint at what lies outside the ... Read More

Books : Beth Chatto's Woodland Garden
Excellent guide to plants for shade. Covers both the obvious and the obscure so likely to be something of interest to all. Would've liked more photographs but those that are there are good. Author is generous in sharing her experience but not quite so readable as Christopher Lloyd.
