Most of gardens of the world can be put into two major categories: formal gardens and naturalistic gardens. The formal gardens are represented by Egyptian gardens, Persian gardens, Islamic gardens, Italian gardens, French gardens, and some American gardens, etc. The naturalistic gardens are represented by some famous English gardens, Chinese gardens, and Japanese gardens, etc.

If you mention English gardens, most people will think of large areas of lawns, trees, garden architecture, lakes and sky. These are the basic elements of a typical English landscape garden.

"The English Garden" covers not only the typical and well-known English landscape gardens, but also formal garden layout ("formal bones"), country gardens, ... Read More

a good gardening book but somewhat misleading, in the small print it tells you that the plants and arrangements are not actually in Sarah Ravens own garden. I find this quite dissapointing.

A very attractive coffe table book, full of high quality images. However, in terms of garden design and maintenance it is a little bit specialist for my taste. Overall, this is one for the garden historian rather than the gardener. Btw - a previous review questions why gardens belonging to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) aren't included in the book. I suspect it's because NTS is an entirely seperate organisation from the National Trust for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, rather than the author not rating gardens north of the border.

Creating a wild flower meadow is not a straight forward task. Many who try, fail. I would not have begun to attempt turning my quartre acre plot of rough pasture into a wild flower meadow without this book. The book is holding my hand all the way and continues to answer all my questions and allay any fears of failure. It is a book full of intelligent and experienced knowledge and makes a delightful read. Pam and Peter Lewis's work is an inspiration. I just hope that more people follow in their footsteps to help create and re-create areas of natural beauty and conservation. Be bold, be brave, be creative. Enthusiasm, passion and this book is all you need.

I have quite a few Japanese garden books, and I'd recommend this one above all others as your first; and if you only buy one, buy this one.

The range of photographs for inspiration is impressive and the accompanying sketches explain points of design theory well. The text is concise yet thorough in almost every aspect you could possibly need. There is not only an extensive plant list, but every one has a photo to show you what the plant looks like too! It's the only place I found an alternative to moss that might grow in my garden.

If you want to create your first garden and don't know where to start, buy this book. You'll probably find that it's the only one you need to get good results (you'll want more, though!). The low cost ... Read More

Books : The Garden: Visions of Paradise (New Horizons)
This is unique stuff indeed. A tiny format packed full of stunning art, original text and a full historical glance in 160 pages.

When browsing through, this is good fun. However, it proves a bit difficult to engage in reading some of the pages - trying to relate image to text without a slight eye ache...

Nonetheless... good value, and by a great garden historian.
