What a truly lovely book this is. Not only is it beautifully produced, but the subject matter is stunning too. Hidden Gardens lives up to its title - I'd never heard of any of these gardens before, but some of them deserve to be world famous. Fantastically artistic photography is used to capture the feel of these gardens, at a variety of times and seasons. Glimpses of the Spanish countryside beyond enhances them.

I'm halfway through copying/recreating one of the gardens at the moment. Some of it's the stuff of dreams, but it's full of great ideas to copy in your own gardens too!

While I cannot deny that this is a beautifully photographed book, with some idyllic suggestions for children's outdoor play spaces, I was very disappointed to find it wholly impractical for what you might call the 'everyday garden'. I chose to buy this book, out of the numerous other guides to family gardening on offer, based on the previous two reviews - which I think miss out on some crucial points. Yes, I could build a willow teepee, or a sandpit, and the stone sink barbecue is fabulous and I'm going to attempt one this weekend, but without an available woodland, ancient tree, terrace or orchard, I would say that 75% of this book is but a pipe dream for me to indulge myself in. My own garden is not particularly small, but neither is it particularly ... Read More

The timeless classic by the late great Thomas D. Church (1902-1978). It is part monograph, part manual, in the best American tradition. Gardens, indeed, are for people, and although one might associate this statement with public work, Church was largely associated with domestic design.

He reinvented the small swimming pool, made decking a trademark of affordable luxury, and, thank heavens, reduced the amount of intended maintenance in the private garden... However, church did more than meets the eye: he appropriated each project, without social discrimination. Church was a great technician and a relentless practitioner - thus fulfilling his quest for domestic comfort for all.

This book is an wonderful story of how the gardens at Heligan were found buried after several decades and their restoration.

Tim Smit takes you through the feelings they had when they discovered it bit by bit sometimes coming across hidden parts of the garden even falling into one down what was the waterfall in the old rockery.

Gradually after hours of breakbreaking work the garden is uncovered and restored into a wondrous place.

Once you have read this book you will be inspired into visiting Heligan to see for yourself what it is like and I can say you will not be disappointed.
