| This book is in many ways like the gardens it wants to revise. It's good in parts and small details in it work well but there's no overall structure, no coherent thread running through it.
At least part of the problem is that the book's scope is too large for a slim volume like this. Two hundred pages of a small format book might be fine for "water garden planning", "courtyard garden planning" or "vegetable garden planning" but the moment the scope is all of "garden planning" it is going to be impossible to cover everything. Parts of this book have given me ideas that I have reused and so in that respect yes it was useful and worth buying, but they are ideas that I has since seen in better detail and description in other books or ... | The timeless classic by the late great Thomas D. Church (1902-1978). It is part monograph, part manual, in the best American tradition. Gardens, indeed, are for people, and although one might associate this statement with public work, Church was largely associated with domestic design. He reinvented the small swimming pool, made decking a trademark of affordable luxury, and, thank heavens, reduced the amount of intended maintenance in the private garden... However, church did more than meets the eye: he appropriated each project, without social discrimination. Church was a great technician and a relentless practitioner - thus fulfilling his quest for domestic comfort for all. |

| I am an amateur gardener without the scientific knowledge of the previous reviewers with whom I agree on the failure of the writer to live up to the high standard set by all those who have written for this series. Having seen his earlier appearances on TV gardening programmes I was somewhat forewarned and, true to form, his arrogance shines through. His prediction in his introduction that the book may be perceived as judgemental, dogmatic and opinionated is fully borne out.
Let's hope the book appreciates in value as its only other purpose is to fill a gap between No 101 and No 103. |

| My first impression when picking up this book was the wonderful array of stunning photographs. However the book is much more than a pretty 'coffee table read'. It has a brief account of the history of the herbacious border as we know it. Then continues with very interesting in-depth accounts of various actual borders, their styles, influances and how they are practically achieved. It also contains a great deal of advice for anyone interested in creating their own border/s, all presented with these magnificent photographs. I found it inspiring! |
