There are many other books that probably do this better, cooking from what you grow, but where this excels is in the life and opinions of Lloyd himself. His daschund 'Dahlia' eating the rising bread dough and uncomfortably rising herself, his dismissal of people who say cucumbers are difficult to digest and his relaxed approach, not all the jobs that should be done in the garden or kitchen do get done. Sometimes it is forgetfulness, but sometimes he just can't be bothered! A great addition to any gardener or cooks' bookshelf.

Rating: 4+ - Beautifully illustrated
I give the book Gardens of Italy by Ann Laras 4+ rating. Sixty gardens is of course a personal selection of gardens by the author. ButI miss a few of the historic and design-wise interesting places. Le Marche is not represented and Villa Barbarigo is also missing, along with some smaller, but exquisite gardens scattered over the peninsula. That said, the photos are great and most of the more famous places are well illustrated. I cannot see who of which has photographed - the author or Ake E:son Lindman. The text is not deep-probing and exploring academic, but describing the place with impressions, interviews with experts, owners and facts. In some places I miss photos of the garden details described in the ... Read More

106.The Art of the Islamic Garden: An Introduction to the Design, Symbolism and Making of an Islamic Garden by: Emma Clark

The author of this book is a convert to Islam, as well as an expert in Islamic gardens. Her book explains the religious significance of the gardens, and I found her faith made them come all the more alive, rather than just the vague holiday memories they had been before to me. She also includes many practical tips on creating a similar style garden for yourself.
My only criticism is that a few of the photographs are not very good quality (but there are many photographs here and most are very good). Also the author's devotion to the subject means that you may miss the lightness of touch and humour that are common in non-academic writing nowadays.

107.The Overloaded Ark by: Gerald Durrell
March 09, 1987
Average Rating: out of 5 stars
>>More Details
Books : The Overloaded Ark
This book is about a business that, for the most part, no longer exists – the business of collecting animals for display in zoos. Wildlife conservation has changed a lot since then so the kind of expedition that Gerald Durrell and his companion, John, undertook in 1953, described in this book, just could not happen now.

Gerald describes how he and John spent several months in Cameroon collecting a variety of animals, birds and reptiles and some of the adventures they had, including the triumphs and disappointments. He acknowledges right at the beginning that the expedition may seem more exciting than it really was, because all the boring aspects have been omitted. Even so, there were enough exciting moments to fill this book.

I have many other books on maples but this has to be one, if not the best, available at the moment. Packed with beautiful colour photos and genuinely useful information this easy reading book is a must for anybody with the slightest interest in maples. The descriptions of the individual trees have a depth of information not found in any of the other books I have read. The only reason I gave it four stars and not five was that the book was published in 1987 and so does not cover the some of the newer varieties available today - never the less, I would consider this an essential book in your collection.
Many thanks to Amazon who managed to source me a copy - well worth the wait.

I have met Craig for the first time in Bruges, Belgium somewhere in the nineties where he was one of the leading demonstrators at the European Bonsai Convention. Since then I have had the honour and the pleasure of meeting and studying with him on several occasions. I knew that Craig was writing this book. I had to wait a long time before I finally could admire it. Yes 'to admire' is the correct word for this masterpiece of a book. But he waiting was worth while! Although that I am still a mere bonsai-amateur, at my current level, I am helped more with photographs than words. And what a photographs this book contains. I will keep this book close to my John Naka-books on the bookshelf. I am already looking forward to his next book! Domo arigato Coussins ... Read More
