If you are a middle-aged British eurosceptic who for some reason wants to buy a property in Italy, and have all your prejudices against the place confirmed at the same time, this is the book for you.

In passing it does manage to contain useful information and if the author permitted it to be professional edited, got someone to check his facts, the errors vary between generalisations and total inaccuracies, it could be quite a good book.

If you have read a few newspaper columns or the odd Interent article then this book probably won't tell you anything that you don't already know.

Sellers have a professional (estate agent) acting for them which traditionally gives them the advantage, so here is a book which helps redress the balance by offering valuable advice to the hapless purchaser.

I found the book's US slant did not distract too much from the useful advice. For me the most useful bits are the roleplays - they illustrate how to play the negotiation game in a very simple yet effective way.

The book does seem to advocate a 'go in strong and low' approach to making offers. This requires nerve, but is a wonderful antidote to ever increasing optimistic sellers's prices and I reckon even the most seasoned housebuyer should be able to learn something from this book.

Hmm... a hard one to review, as there is so much in here which is useful both to the avid indoor gardener, and novice alike.
The book, originally published in 1982 looks tired, and could have been easily updated with better graphics and photographs... illustrating ideas with (then) contempory photo's was a ground breaking step, now it looks odd. Very American in its idea's as well, and not terribly relevant to U.K. interiors.
Still, it has clear to follow guides, a useful little problem's page, and some nice illustrations.
Could however have been updated in order to be as valuable now as it was when I was starting out my indoor adventures.

I bought this book a couple of years ago and - despite all the other great books out there on the same subject - I always come back to this one. It is very well structured and written in a style and format that is easy for anybody to understand and apply to their own needs. The plant, shrub and tree references at the back of the book are really very useful. My own garden is now extremely wildlife friendly and much of the influence to both get me started and continue to maintain the garden are down to this excellent little book.
