| As with all Dr Hessayon Book this is a great addition to your collection.
I have just been back to college to do a NVQ in Horticulture; I didn't know anything about these books until my tutor let me have a read of it. I found this book to be a great source of information for a beginner, and I also think very keen gardeners will also use the book as the information is vast. It covers what kind of plants can and can not be used in certain soil type, also covers soil structures. The book has some very good photos, some you will probably know and some you may not. It tells you all about the plant, where to plant them, how far apart, how big they will get. The book covers pruning of the plants, also ... Read More |

| a good gardening book but somewhat misleading, in the small print it tells you that the plants and arrangements are not actually in Sarah Ravens own garden. I find this quite dissapointing. |

| Very practical ideas for intensively using space for successive waves of flower-power. Yes, his garden was enormous, but the technique transfers eficaciously to small areas. This is a highly practical book, despite the wonderfully distracting photography. I garden in North Eastern Spain (continental climate, not Mediterranean, where the problems of hardiness and drought-resistance are combined. Many of the combinations or types of plants in this book i already have established, evidence that this is not a book only relevant to Sussex. If you spend 5 years only buying and trying hardy perennials, you will eventually find you have a solid basis of all round colour, on which to play with subsequently! My soil is clay with only home-made compost added. Enjoy. |

| I am a big advocate on using plants to create green walls and roofs. They can reduce the urban "heat island" effect and create usable green open spaces. I found this book's discussions on Intensive Green Roof, Extensive Green Roof, , Ecoroof, Brown Roof, etc interesting. This book is a serious attempt on a difficult subject. The color photos inside the book are helpful also.
There are still technical difficulties in using green walls and roofs: water proofing, how to handle the structural weight of large trees, how to integrate large plants with building structure, etc. All these technical discussions are needed, and they could be the subject of another book. | Despite being six years since the second revised edition was published in 2002, this book is still a cracker. Normally I am a little wary of US publications for use in the UK but this excellent work rises above any minor international differences.
As a newcomer to garden and landscape design, Grant Reid's book will be an invaluable help until I have enough experience to carry out "on auto pilot" the skills he explains. And even then the book will be a useful reference. The subject is comprehensively covered and presented in an easy-to-follow, superbly illustrated style. | A great "first book" on the subject of Japanese gardening. Nice color photos (but never enough), and the how-to's are easy to understand. A section on various shaped stones and stone placement. I refer back to mine often. |

| Detailing is difficult for young design professionals. College education does not cover enough detail design, the only ways to learn how to develop details are: 1) learn through working experience in design offices; 2) teach yourself by reading good books.
"Detail in Contemporary Landscape Architecture" can alleviate this problem. It is a book on design details, not construction details.
