Finally a book that caters for people who love their gardens but don't happen to know the latin names for plants or all the technical terms that Gardeners Question Time fans can probably recite blindfold. As the owner of a small/medium city space garden this has been a revelation in providing practical tips and beautiful (and often affordable and achievable)inspiration. Beautifully laid out and photographed, along with very clear diagrams and models. This book provides recognises that many of us don't own mature cottage gardens with acres and acres of space - a very good value title.

I have recently been thinking about that particular design and architecture that I used to see a child in the sixties and seventies in parks. There is little of it left and that is no surprise really as it lacked taste, delicacy, subtlety or safety. Leaving aside memorial fountains and other architecture such as war memorials, quasi-zoological displays and functional sports facilities such as bowling greens, as well as most of London as this is a county town rather than metropolitan phenonenon, I would say that it was essentially characterised by excessive floribundance, ostentatious rurality and unabashed exoticism. It was as if social classes deprived of the countryside could not be expected to recognise normal horticulture, but needed to ... Read More

The illustrations were very good as a first time person to trellis making, I found this book very exciting. The author made it simple for people to follow and do the project. I liked the detail he gave for making each project. Making arches to gates for your flower garden, they are all nice pieces of art. He tells also what is great to grow on the trellises. Thanks

The timeless classic by the late great Thomas D. Church (1902-1978). It is part monograph, part manual, in the best American tradition. Gardens, indeed, are for people, and although one might associate this statement with public work, Church was largely associated with domestic design.

He reinvented the small swimming pool, made decking a trademark of affordable luxury, and, thank heavens, reduced the amount of intended maintenance in the private garden... However, church did more than meets the eye: he appropriated each project, without social discrimination. Church was a great technician and a relentless practitioner - thus fulfilling his quest for domestic comfort for all.

This book is exactly what I was searching for. I love to garden, but I also need to accommodate my two rambunctious children and a variety of pets. This book has page after page of creative ideas, safety considerations, examples, and plenty of photos. The author is clear, interesting, and very informative about both gardening and childhood development.
