This book is split into 2 halves. The first has slightly waffly text mixed with gorgeous photos, describing the various ways of using exotic plants to create a gorgeous garden. The second half is a directory of plants, but is so brief in places it isn't very much use at all. For example, hardiness of some plants is described as "varies according to species". It's in this area Giles redeems himself in his latest book, "Encyclopedia of Exotic Plants for Temperate Climates", which is essentially a very much extended version of this section of the book.

When this book came out it was one of the first on the subject, now it's one of a selection and is less essential because of that. Nevertheless, it's a good read.

Augmented landscapes is an absolute gem of a book and a real find.

Smout Allen display an inherent love and sympathy for the relationship between architecture and the landscape, the schemes presented display a wit and charm underpinned by their English garden shed mentality, this is not to underplay the seriousness of their work and the intellectual rigour and extensive research that underpins it, the drawings are quite simply beautiful and follow in the Heath Robinson tradition and display a complete understanding of that whimsical genre, it shows that they live in their own beautifully complete universe of kites, telescopes and trolleys and are immune from the vagaries of faddism and fashion that seems to corrupt so many of their ... I have read quit a few 'how-to' books and one or two 'art of' books about Japanese Gardens/Gardening, and this one is simply the best. Chronically ordered, the author summarised the garden style of each period in Japanese history with abstractions, eg:
The Kamakura era -- Rocks in the sand: Gardens of austerity
The Azuchi-Momoyama era -- Path and goal: Gardens of seclusion

Which is really helpful to understand the tendency of the evolution of Japanese gardens. Although there may definitely have some alternation from the theory, and no theory covers every thing, isn't it.

The information contained in book is amazingly rich, eg, it contains about two hundred photos, tens pictures of garden layout (which are very precious), ... Read More

"To qualify as a `landscape of man,' an environment must be deliberately shaped at a specific time." "Art is a continuous process..." Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe and his wife Susan wrote, "All design therefore derives from impressions of the past, conscious or subconscious, and in the modern collective landscape, from historic gardens and parks and silhouettes which were created for totally different social reasons..."
