This is an extensively researched and well-written book that investigates how garden plants arrived in England. The writer, a respected garden historian and fellow of the Linnean Society, has chosen to divide her material into centuries. She sets the scene with a look at Roman and Anglo-Saxon approaches to gardening and plants, then gets into more detail about plant immigrants, starting with the first century of the second millennium.

To put the reader more clearly in the picture the writer starts each chapter (century) with a list of significant dates so we can see how historical events influenced the arrival of plants. It is perhaps quite surprising that there aren't more books available that combine vegetable gardening with the art of cookery so it is a real pleasure that this, the pack leader is such a delight. The enthusiasm of Monty Don flows out from whatever he is doing at the time and there is no difference here in Fork to Fork.
Besides being a practical gardening book and organic to boot, and an inspirational kitchen guide, Fork to Fork is also a visual pleasure, packed with heartwarming garden photography that makes you want to rush outside and emulate.
There was also something else about this book that simply encourages you to take a deep breathe and slow down awhile.
A book that is simply delightful.

Will Joseph.

The book has all you need to know about trees and shrubs for in your garden, they are listed alphabetically with a miriad of symbols explaining the particular plants needs and wonts. The main drawback of the book is that it hasn't any pictures thus depriving you the idea of what the plant could look like in your garden, words can only describe so much.
The book has many new trees/shrubs not included before,
but what do they look like ?! Apart from the lack of photography the book is be an invaluble guide on the subject.

Bought this for both myself and my sister. Brilliant. Would highly recommend for anyone who is interested in orchids, whatever the level. We are both hooked and my collection is now getting out of control, but without this book I would not have had the courage to move out of my comfort zone and try new species.
