| I bought this book over a year ago and it is an absolute stunner of a reference guide for the beginner as well as the more knowledgeable. Not only is a full description given of each plant with pictures, but also a great deal of information on plant combinations - a lot of good ideas to pinch and put in your own garden. The large photographs at the beginning of each chapter are superb. I wouldn't be without this classic. |

| Unequivocally superb. Brilliant aid to identification, which really works. The illustrations are clear, the information is comprehensive. My own tree knowledge is basic; but I would imagine this working for those far more knowledgeable as well. A real labour of love from the author and illustrator, which is a real pleasure to consult and browse through. |

The main drawback of the book is that it hasn't any pictures thus depriving you the idea of what the plant could look like in your garden, words can only describe so much. The book has many new trees/shrubs not included before, but what do they look like ?! Apart from the lack of photography the book is be an invaluble guide on the subject. |

| As always Oliver Rackham's readable style of writing comes to the fore, whether you are a student, expert or layman you'll always find something interesting in this and all his other books. I feel that his criticisms and "biased" opinions all add to his charm, something that is lacking in the more dry and fusty scientific texts. Also Dr Rackham's passion and enthusiasm shine through in every sentence!! |

| I recall hearing Richard Mabey discussing this book on a radio show, before it was published and thinking its premise: collecting contibutors personal experiences of British plant life, seemed rather uninspired. Surely this kind of thing has been done to death? Nature magazine columns have been filled for years with people writing accounts of things they have seen in the British countryside.
When it was published, I was further put off by the high price of the book. I was completely wrong on both counts, the price, when the size, scope and quality of the book are considered, seems more than reasonable. As to the premise of the work, Richard Mabey, a genius writer in my opinion, pulls all the various accounts from amateur contributors together ... Read More |

| A great book to have with you in the home, very easy to read and understand.
Contains all the information on plants and the ideal location in the home without going into too much detail. I have found this book very easy to use and to help me identify plants that I have been unsure of and solutions to problems like yellow leaves etc and when to feed. |
