| Like most people who follow a hobby, I like to absorb as much knowledge as I can, from a variety of sources. Alan Rowe's book is full of useful information for people who are growing apples or pears for use as food, or drink - alcoholic or otherwise. For my purposes it is best described as an accompanying book to 'fill in the gaps' in my knowledge through the passing on of Alan's many years of experience in growing and pressing these fruit, and looking after the land on which his trees grow. It is aimed mainly at those with a kitchen garden, allotment or smallholding, whether there are existing fruit trees or space to plant new trees. | For a couple of years I've toyed with the idea of making a vegetable garden. Problem is I don't really like that much "proper" vegetable gardens because if they are not perfect they are not pleasant to the eye. Last year I gave it a try, planting some tomatoes and caulifowers here and there in my flowerbeds and decided to give it a try BUT do it my way. This book showed me that there is a way to planting whatever you want to and don't have to hide it at the bottom of your garden (incidentally, my garden has no bottom, neither is big enough). Now I am full of ideas and, most important, it is not going to be a case of trial and error like last year.

| An excellent introduction and reference book for growing salad plants. The usual supects are covered as well as some rather more obscure ones. Creatively illustrated with marvelous photography, Larkcom firstly arranges chapters of salad plants such as stems and stalks, fruiting vegetables etc., as you would expect, but also flowers, herbs and wild plants. She then turns her attention to cultivation and finally ends with a few recipes. Anyone interested in starting a small kitchen garden, allotment or potager will find this invaluable and desperately inspiring. Joy Larkcom has been growing food since the seventies and her knowlege and clear style are inspiring. |

| This is a truly excellent book. Each fruit is given good coverage, with recommendations as to variety and culture advice. It is also extensive in the range of fruits which are covered. There's even a few recipes thrown in. If you want to grow any sort of fruit then go for this book. |

| This book reminds me of the kind of gardening book my Grannie would have used.
It's laid out in an easy-to-follow style and Diana Galligan's writing is chatty and inviting. She gives plenty of straightforward advice on everything from how to look after a vegetable plot to what to plant when and how to store it (very useful). There are no photographs, but the centre fold-out pages have plenty of colour sketches of vegetables common vegetables, which are olde worlde and quite endearing. I'd have loved a little more detailed information - for example what exactly is meant by "early autumn" vs "late autumn", but I'm sure I'd work it out. | If you missed this the first time around, it has been repeated on the Sky Garden Channel, and what a fabulous series it still is. Not yet available on DVD, or, in its day, on VHS; and I wondered why? But this book has everything you could possibly need other than having the pleasure of watching it on the TV screen. The recipes, the period adverts and the background information on the unfortunate War makes for an excellent read, or companion, should it ever be released.
