But there is much more in this book. Although Will McLewin's taxonomic analysis is applied to Peony rockii and the Gansu Mudan, his writing has much wider significance. Do read this book to think about two additional lessons. Firstly, the concept of a plant species (or cultivar) is not quite so clearly defined as you might think. Secondly, plant species should not be defined by a single herbarium "type plant", but by careful analysis of populations of (wild) plants. Read and reflect, but above all admire the work of Will McLewan and Chen Dezhong. |

I have grown bonsai for 20+ years and despite having a reasonable collection of books, I learned more about the actual trees from this book than all the others put together. It doesn't go into minute detail on a variety of trees, it doesn't have lists of trees, it doesn't have step by step guides, there is nothing in the the book in great detail, but I'm not doing a degree and it does have clear examples of positioning the tree, selecting trees and pots,and more, but the one section that made me understand how to keep my trees healthier is the Plant Physiology section, not bonsai specific but how roots, leaves, trunks and branches function, transpiration and respiration, ...
