| Originally written in the 1950's and still in print, I've no doubt that this is the definative book for identifying North American Trees. Presented in glorious black and white, the many photographs are clear and bold but are of little use for precise British tree recognition. Great if you're planning a field trip to the US but I see little point in offering this book through the UK version of this web portal. |

| I bought this book at the same time as Robert Lee Riffle's "Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms" and I agree with the previous reviewer that it is helpful up to a point. Martin Gibbon's book succeeds in giving a selection of the diversity of palms in cultivation around the world, together with some brief descriptive text and information on cultivation. The photographs unfortunately are rather small to do justice to their subjects and in most cases would not be of much help in identifying a plant.
Which brings me to my main criticism - the book is not an identifier and so is perhaps unfortunately named by the publisher. Young palms rarely display the species' mature characteristics and can be confusing to tell apart. I have a young ... Read More |

| I run small gardening business in Scotland and have always been on the lookout for a good easy access handbook for my staff to keep in their van for reference purposes. This and the other pocket books in the Hessayon series are ideal and I now issue all my staff with copies upon joining my company. The information is easy to understand and the no-nonsense pruning, site&soil and propogation sections are more than adequate for day to day use. I would recomend this and its series to anyone looking for a handy sized reference to garden plants and their care, especially since it'll fit, as it says, in a pocket! (you'll need a big pocket for all three though!). |
