If you've decided now's the time to 'go green' but don't know where to start, try this book. It is packed full of information and tips for going organic in your garden. The author explains in layman's terms why chemicals are bad for your garden and the environment, and how they affect wildlife, and she tells you all about wildlife-friendly plants and planting schemes to try.

Did you know that many of your garden foes could actually be your friends? The author explains that there's even such a thing as a 'good' slug! Apparently the testacella slug, identifiable by a little shell on its back, is your garden friend and will eat other slugs but not your vegetation... and you'll find plenty more tips like this. What's more, 'going green' ... Read More

This guy is a professor based in the US and although it is American and I'm not quite sure all of the chemicals mentioned are allowed for use in gardens in the UK this is a good book any UK gardener will find interesting. Starting off with an open mind and a keen interest in research he finds out which pesticides are the most harmful to use - both organic and chemical - and tries to blow away some of the rhetoric used on both sides of the argument. I found his style very readable and although he is talking lots of science you never feel confused. I'd recommend it to any inquisitive gardener who wants to get their facts straight about organics.

I have really enjoyed reading this book. the illustrations and photographs really make this a beautiful book. The information is good, but by no means complete, so would be good for beginners to read and get some insight into life as a smallholder and begin inspiring dreams of a sufficient way of life.
An asset to anyones bookshelf, if only for its visual appeal.

Day has decided that paganism(s) are "not spiritual" and nothing to do with religion. I guess that's a lot of people out there who are, to his mind, doing it all wrong and they need to follow the advice in his book.

The advice itselt is strange. Embrace nature but your garden, if you have one, should be turned over to wildlife and not primarily used for growing food organically and sustainably (you must, however, buy organic local food at the shops - because we can all afford to do that!). He gives advice on breastfeeding which you MUST do WHEN you have a child. I always love advice from men on birth and breastfeeding from men, especially the sort an ultra-conservative monotheist would come out with.

Books : New Dieter's Cookbook: Low-calorie Home Cooking
This is one of the best Diet cookbooks I've found, and I own quite a few. The recipes are delicious and the photographs are beautiful (a picture on every page!) A lot of diet cookbooks either have boring recipes or aren't really calorie-wise, sacrificing portion size instead of utilizing smarter choices for lowfat cooking. This cookbook does not fall into that category.
