I think the extreme reviews on this site in respect of this book (i.e. the 1 star and 5 star) are all a bit wide of the mark. I enjoyed reading the book and the fact that it might not feel very realistic in parts didn't detract from my enjoyment. The author could have been more subtle but I thought the opening was great and, on the whole, I thought this book was easy and enjoyable to read over a few days, albeit I suspect it won't leave a lasting impression on me.

The hero in "The Ghost" in an unnamed ghostwriter, who takes over the job as ghostwriter for British ex-prime minister Adam Lang, after the previous ghostwriter, Mike McAra, died mysteriously. Our ghost hero travels to Martha's Vineyard where Lang is staying, and while the ghost tries to meet his deadline, Adam Lang is accused of war crimes and the ghost happens upon some of McAra's research, he realizes Lang may be hiding something.

The book is written in first person, and it's well written, often funny. The book kept my interest and at first the ending seemed like a bit of an anticlimax, but it eventually delivered, but not in the way I had expected. "The Ghost" may not appeal to all thriller fans but I found it enjoyed it.

Ian Fleming's last James Bond adventure - a collection of short stories including Octopussy and The Living Daylights - was published posthumously in 1967.

That wasn't the end of 007's adventures in print. Kingsley Amis wrote a well received sequel in 1967 - `Colonel Sun' - and in 1981, Glidrose Publications hired thriller-writer John Gardner to reinvent Bond for the modern era.

What followed were 14 increasingly dreary and unbelievable books which saw an aging Bond gamely struggle through a litany of dumb adventures (the highlight being the rescue of Margaret Thatcher from a hijacked aircraft carrier in 1989's Win, Lose or Die.)

American thriller author Raymond Bensen was hired in 1996 to continue Gardner's ... Read More

I have read all of Mr Robinson's books, in the Banks series,
and feel l can make a justified review of his latest work.
Having to say at the start, that l still think 1 day Cabbot
will go back with Banks into a relationship.
It's the strangest start to a book l have read, the murders
are solved so quick. But the reasons for why are the story
base line. My ignorance shows through when he starts
talking about Othello!!
If you were to ask me is it a good bank's story l would
say yes without doubt, like in any Bank's story there
always twists and turns.
I'm convinced that if Banks went into a desert, he would
find water, because in his questioning there isn't anything
he doesn't ... Read More

This book was recommended to me as a thought provoking and truly good read. It made me really think about God and how he loves us. It doesn't matter that it may not be theologically correct, it is a story and doesn't claim to take the place of the bible but, what it does do, is to really make you take a good look at how you conduct yourself and behave towards others. As a Christian, it really made me realise that some of the feelings and experiences we have can do so much damage to us, but with God's love our lives and behaviour can change. If we all took more time to love and be more forgiving the world and our lives would be so much better. It was a gripping story and I would definitely recommend it, in fact I have recommended it and so far all my friends ... Read More

With "A Snowball in Hell" (I do recommend you read "A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away" and "The Sacred Art of Stealing" before this one) Brookmyre is again his sharp funny self with a very dark side. Simon Darcourt is a celebrity killer in more ways than one. First he enjoys murdering famous people, especially ones who have no talent or reason for being famous. But he has become a celebrity in his own right via his posting real time video of his killings and to make things really interesting he lets visitors to his site vote on wether the victim lives or dies. This makes for some wonderfully black humor. Darcourt's website is getting more hits than Google and he is more famous then the last winner of American Idol. It is again up to Angelique De Xavier ... I bought this book because of the numerous reviews raving about it but I ended up feeling let down by it. I found quite a few problems with it. For a start it could have done with some more editing, the plot is really not interesting enough to fill a book of this length and I began to find it very repetitive. The central character Joseph had the same boring thoughts and dreams over and over again. I think it was supposed to be haunting but it was just dull. Right from the start I found it difficult to get into.
Another difficulty I had was engaging with the characters because none of them were likeable really. Also as others have pointed out Joseph's life is quite ridiculously tragic, it was like being in a soap opera where people he loves drop like flies in ... Read More

Simon Kernick proves to be an excellent thriller writer. The novel "Deadline" is a clear reflection of this. Word of mouth of communication persuaded me to actually read the novel. I am really satisfied with what I have read, as it is a well paced thriller novel that really intrigued me for long periods. The plot to the novel always surprised you, when you think it is all over.

The Deadline comprises an explosive plot, credible characters and a well portrayal of the criminal world of London. The suburban life is the key background of the novel. The story is about an ordinary businesswoman Andrea, who's daughter kidnapped by mysterious attackers and she is imposed an ransom to ensure the safe return of the daughter. What are the main motives for the kidnapping? ... Read More
