| While I cannot deny that this is a beautifully photographed book, with some idyllic suggestions for children's outdoor play spaces, I was very disappointed to find it wholly impractical for what you might call the 'everyday garden'. I chose to buy this book, out of the numerous other guides to family gardening on offer, based on the previous two reviews - which I think miss out on some crucial points. Yes, I could build a willow teepee, or a sandpit, and the stone sink barbecue is fabulous and I'm going to attempt one this weekend, but without an available woodland, ancient tree, terrace or orchard, I would say that 75% of this book is but a pipe dream for me to indulge myself in. | I bought this book a while ago, when I acquired a house with a pool in France. I have since learned how to take care of my pool, but I have to say most of my knowledge has been acquired not from this book, but by laboriously hunting around on the internet. The author clearly has loads of experience with plaster pools in the US, but things seem to work rather differently with a typical liner pool here in France. The American names for many chemicals are different from those we use in British English, and the products and equipment commonly available here are rather different than those described in the book. | I got this kit around 4 months ago. Out of the seeds two grew but one died and I now have a little two inch tree which is growing slowly but surely.
Follow the instructions EXACTLY, it may sound silly putting the seeds in the fridge but it's to copy the effect of seasons for the seeds, going from cold to warm. Definately worth a go but don't expect all the seeds to grow! |

| I've had this book a few years now and I always keep it at hand to inspire me, it is well written, has good practical advice along with clear illustrations and wonderful photographs showing both established Japanese gardens and Western gardens in the Japanese style, there's even a few pages at the end describing various plants ,trees and shrubs that go well with this style. If you're planning a Japanese garden - get it, or even if you just like to peruse beautiful books with inspiring pics - get it, you will love it. |
