Due to a plumbing fault in the house, my family have been composting in the back garden on a daily basis for over a year. What a bonus to stumble upon this book and find out that our actions have been helping to preserve the future of our planet! A number of residents in our street have complainined that the local environment has been suffering from some rather unpleasant air pollution of late, so we feel proud to be putting something back.

It may be a bit of a strange thing to say - but I actually enjoyed reading this book. Lots of good information and ideas. Just have to put some of them into practice now.

I must confess from the beginning: I'm a cannabis grower who came to this book wanting some hints on how to grow poppies. I thought a general guide to this subject might get me started. There is one problem though: this book is too old. First published in 1977 and revised in 1990, there are years of developments in this field which have just passed this book by. For a start, everybody nowadays uses kits, they are easy to get and relatively cheap, so we just don't need the pages of information on how to make your own. Plus, he barely talks about lights: presumably they weren't really used when he wrote the book. Then, the author's proselytising for hydroponics (how valuable it might be for the Third World etc), takes up room that might be used for explaining ... Read More

This is a brilliant book, looking at the farmers who grow and develop various organic produce. It is written in a month-to-a-chapter format, with each chapter highlighting a particular sector of the organic industry, IE bakery, dairy, meat etc. It has some excellent tips on growing your own produce and tells you what you should be doing in your garden at each point in the year. This was very interesting to read and helpful in increasing my knowledge of organic food and it's benefit in one's diet.

I think Leeder's textbook will appeal to anyone who's striving to learn more about sedimentology and dynamic stratigraphy. It's a concise, yet thorough introduction to many topics selected within the vast, ever-expanding (and worryingly so! ) field of sedimentary geology... The author's main goal was probably to provide readers with a clear sense of how well integrated sedimentary geology now is with many other branches of earth and life sciences, physics and chemistry. And in my opinion such aim is succesfully achieved. The book will be suitable read to all those who have already taken an introductory, comprehensive course in sedimentology, and are on the look for something else to be inspired in their reflections. Reading through many of the chapters, newcomers ... Read More
