His book, Composting - An Easy Household Guide, was originally published in 2005 and the second edition was released in 2006. The cover and all ninety-six pages are printed on 100% recycled paper.
This book is slightly more advanced than his smaller booklet, Composting For All. Both books discuss why compost is such an important factor in reducing stress on landfills. | I must confess from the beginning: I'm a cannabis grower who came to this book wanting some hints on how to grow poppies. I thought a general guide to this subject might get me started. There is one problem though: this book is too old. First published in 1977 and revised in 1990, there are years of developments in this field which have just passed this book by. For a start, everybody nowadays uses kits, they are easy to get and relatively cheap, so we just don't need the pages of information on how to make your own. Plus, he barely talks about lights: presumably they weren't really used when he wrote the book. Then, the author's proselytising for hydroponics (how valuable it might be for the Third World etc), takes up room that might be used ... Read More |

| Now over 10 year's old, this book outlines a lot of very useful information on starting small scale farming in an organic way. It is approved by the Soil Association - and that does mean it can be trusted. The author is an experienced farmer who understands the problems of going organic - both for the 'new to farming' and the experienced farmer. Chapters explain both crop and animal husbandry - and give the pigs a welcome boost (You don't need a tractor if you have a pig!). Useful for the market gardening fraturnity too. I am pleased I bought this. |
