New fairytales are surely dangerous territory for big film studio's to venture into. Stardust has overcome that hurdle by recruiting an 'A' list cast.
Having taken that leap of faith, a production of great merit is the result. The triumph of which must be the understated, tongue in cheek delivery by the principles, even the Americans. Robert De Niro way out of his comfort zone does a particulaly good job.
Its like a 'Princess Bride', with a big budget. And in that league as well. Enjoy.

All the hype when it was at the cinema. Hailed as the new Grease. It just didn't appeal to me. No musical could possibly beat Grease and it would be so overrated. So when I saw it at my local supermarket for cheap I thought i'd give it a try and I almost kicked myself after watching it. Not for spending money on it but for not seeing it on the big screen. The songs are so beautifully sung by a magnificent cast and so catchy you just want to sing along and be apart of it. I immediately ordered the soundtrack when it finished. Nikki Blonsky was cast perfectly as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (I don't usually like him in HSM but he won me round in this) was the right choice of Link. John Travolta also had me laughing in every one of his scenes as Edna ... Read More

I expect that if your buying this you'll know what its about so I'll review on the quality of the image if I may. Some films, especially older ones have a poor quality transfer onto DVD, though not this one. Colours and detail are first class, offering up a bright colourful image devoid of any nasties (blocking etc. If you've seen DVDs of the orignial Star Wars the picture quality is on a par with them.

I am rather surprised by the negative ratings of this set. It is quite clear that it contains the one disc versions, and if, like me you just want the first four Batman films then this set is a brilliant, very cost effective way of getting them.

All films are presented in Dolby 5.1 surround sound which, particularly on the last two discs, is extremely effective and really adds to the films.

I enjoyed all four films but in different ways and for different reasons. "Batman Forever" and "Batman and Robin" are far more like the sixties TV show, which I don't find a bad thing as they make fun, entertaining viewing. The first two Burton films are darker and probably closer to the original comic (although I must confess I haven't ... Read More

How can I communicate the aberration that this represents?
I hope that a number of you will be repelled simply to hear that the roles of Hermia and Helena are taken (and then forgotten about) by those mascots of "Pretty but Pointless", Calista Flockhart and Anna Friel. Calista Flockhart rides a Penny Farthing bicycle and blows the tumbling tendrils of hair off her forehead regularly - but it gets worse, even when the talent gets more accomplished.
Stanley Tucci would get laughed off a senior school stage for the way that he tries to invest Puck with thoughtfulness and fun: Jimmie Krankee would have done a better job. Rupert Everett's Oberon is reminescent of a Studio 54 Go-Go dancer murmuring something he has a distant memory of, and Kevin ... Read More

A brilliant film, perhaps a word too often used, but nontheless, brilliant. Penn's consitency of performance is the key, ably supported by the main characters and cameo's from a few other good actors taking bit parts. Excellent and recommended.

Michelle Pfeiffer is an actress that I like and admire alot, but for some reason here she looks uncomfortable and when she laughs it strikes me a sounding really false too.

I've not seen much of Paul Rudd I have a number of films that he appears in, but only in small supporting roles, the film tries to make a star out of a limited actor and most of his attempts at humour fall flat too.

The British actors which include Tracy Ullman are given very little to do which is a huge shame as I've seen all of the actors in various shows and they ARE funny people, also Jon Lovitz is another actor who I really enjoy watching, again he's no more than a bit part actor here.

I thought that the music was easily the best thing about the ... Read More

I'm not religious in any sense of the word, so my review will be based purely on the film placed in front of me, and not on any historical innacuracies and deviances from the actual story, or any religious implications in the film.

I was blown away by this film to be honest. The story, the voice acting, the animation, it was all faultless, and though the songs took a bit of getting used to (they didn't seem to have that sweet, flowing quality I was used to seeing in most cartoon musicals) the soundtrack fits the film incredibly well, with the obvious standout song of 'there can be miracles' made famous by Mariah carey and whitney Houston. One fault I did have however was the script, which at times felt slightly awkward, but the voice actors did the best ... Read More

This film adaptation is possibly one of the best adaptations I have ever seen committed to film. Featuring a standout cast including John Malkovic, Glenn Close, Michelle Pfeiffer, Uma Thurman (in one of her first films) and Keanu Reeves, of those mentioned I would say that John Malkovic and Michelle Pfeiffer gave the best performances. Both are mesmerizing in their respective roles and the rest of the cast are also on form with Glenn Close relishing her part.

I also felt the production design and the costumes were top drawer and the direction from Stephen Frears was first class. He managed to get the feel for the period of the time, 18th Century France, to perfection and brought out some dazzling set pieces and excellent performances from his cast. It won 3 Oscars (Best Screenplay ... Read More

There are plenty of customer reviews of this superb film already - wonderful acting by all the cast; great directing and a deft adaptation, though it takes liberties with Updike's novel. An absolute classic which is great fun to watch again and again.

My gripe, here, is with the print of the Warner Home Video DVD. Poor picture quality, particularly in the first half hour, is a huge disappointment. And the sound is not that good, either. The age of the film is no excuse. I watched, the day before, an immaculate and sparkling print of the Bette Davis classic NOW VOYAGER, so if a 1940s movie can look that good, Warners should have done better with this 1987 film.

This happens time and again with a good many DVDs. Often the original film frame turns out to be cropped, to fit ... Read More
