From the point of view of an adult this film has lots of flaws - perhaps too long and the humour wasn't so great and the love story a bit unconvincing. But for children it is something of a wonder with tremendous special effects, battleaxe witches, sword fights, chases on horseback,a pirate ship that flies through the air, palaces and cities built on towering mountain peaks ( much of the scenery is scottish), and mystery and mayhem all over the place.
The last twenty minutes or so is great whatever your age:one of the best fight sequences I've ever seen on film.

First things first i am a huge Scorsese fan, however this film left me feeling very cold and unfulfilled. The cast is superb and the storyline could have been interesting, however what i found most surprising is that i simply did not care. The characters are disfunctional but this does not endear you to them, in fact it irritated me. I have watched this 3 times and whilst many Mean Streets purists will no doubt say i have to watch this many times to appreciate it, i honestly cannot ever see another occassion when i will by choice ever watch this!! There are very few films i have really not enjoyed but this is certainly one of them.

The Departed, Goodfellas, Aviator etc etc are all more watchable than this!

This isn't quite up there with Goodfellas, but it's still an incredible ride. The cinematography and music are stunning, and the violence is harsh and brutal stuff. It's an interesting story, very well told, and should be seen by anyone who enjoys a good gangster movie. Fine stuff.

This film has a suprising amount of A-list actors in it and deserves more recognition I think. Robert DeNiro plays his role as Father Bobby exceptionally well and Brad Pitt and Kevin Bacon also provide good performances. Essentially great injustices are done and finally righted with sweet revenge, the interplay of all the characters as this story of revenge unfolds is at least partly what makes it such a good movie.

1976 was a funny electoral year. One year after the full defeat in Vietnam and the evacuation of Saigon on the run. Two years after the resignation of Nixon, to avoid an impeachment that would have led to the very first conviction of the President. 1976 was the year when all had to changed, and nothing really changed because the establishment just looked for a way to save face and restore the everyday standard imperialistic power, and of course that will fail with Jimmy Carter, but Scorsese could not know it though everyone knew that success would be a miracle. What's more, success in that line was doomed in the long run. It was not yet possible to know what was going to happen in China, but we could know it was going to change, even if it was quite clear that the Soviet Union ... Read More

When slave trader Robert de Niro kills his brother in a duel, he turns to a man of the cloth, Jeremy Irons, to seek redemption from his past. Certainly he is made to suffer until he has proved his remorse to both himself and to Jeremy Irons.

Eventually, de Niro, joins the order of priests who live amoungst a tribe of south american indians, who are under brutal threat from both Spain and Portugal's 18th century colonial empires.

How can the man of the cloth and the former man of the sword unite to sheild the tribe from subjugation and genocide ??

Nominations and awards a plenty for this one. Not one of Robert de Niro's best known films, but neverless one of his best. Jeremy Irons is perfectly cast in his role also.

I was rather disappointed with a film that went on far too long (during the last hour I was continually fast forwarding the action). It is always a good idea to enable the viewer to empathise with the main characters - in this film there was actually nothing to like about any of the main characters. At times the dialogue plodded along and I was waiting for something of note to happen - it very rarely did! Boring and not a patch on the Godfather or Goodfellas.

I watched this film for the first time today, oblivious as to what it was about and only interested in it because of the rave reviews I'd heard. Well, it definatley wasn't what I ewas expecting, but it was very good none the less. Set in the 1930s when alchohol was illegal in the US, Al Capone is the Crime Lord trading the stuff for masses of money, and Eliot Ness, the federal Agent who is determined to bring him down. I wasn't particularly blown away by any of the acting, I guess Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness is worth a mention, but although each character played their part well none of them stood out or really made the character their own. What does deserve a mention however is the style in which the Untouchables was filmed - lots of weird camera angles and shots, lots of dramatic music, all building up suspense, ... Read More

The storyline is simple, there are almost no sub-plots, the dialogue is very sparse, and there is limited characterisation in the lead roles.

And yet this movie works wonderfully well. It not only evokes memories of Brief Encounter, it is also vividly reminiscent of Claude Lelouch's Un Homme et Une Femme, partly because of the train scenes, partly because of Ms Streep's divided loyalties, and partly because of the tremendous score.

The coincidences may seem a little contrived at first, but extraordinary coincidences do sometimes happen in real life, and part of the movie's appeal lies in its portrayal of the impact of love - both for good and for ill.

Nowadays, mobile phones and emails allow us to keep in contact with almost anybody at any time of the day or night. But back in 1984, it ... Read More
