This is the Coen Brothers back to their best, after a mis-step with Intolerable Cruelty and, frankly, an awful remake of The Ladykillers.
The pacing, script, acting, direction are all first class.

Many people seem to have awarded this just 1 star. That is a disgrace.

If you liked Three Burials, Michael Clatyon and In The Vally of Elah, this will be your type of film.

If not, watch The Jeremy Kyle Show in your underwear and have a pot-noodle.

That may be more your cup of tea.

Well, season four has completely blown me away. Building on the achievements of the previous three seasons it adds a new dimension which you might say was previously lacking: genuine emotional involvement. As I've said before the writing and the detail contained within it had made us interested in the characters and to care about them too. But by focusing on the education system, and a group of eighth graders in particular, it forces us to really worry about a group of children growing up in a city which has already shown that for some people the only opportunities available are different ways to ruin your life.

Still leagues ahead of anything else, season 5 of The Wire IS the weakest so far, and anyone who's watched all five cannot fail to agree. That is to say it is the only less than perfect season out of all of them so while it pains me to find any fault with any of it at all I think the focus should be on the incredible consistency of the show in it's entirety. I've watched each one year on year and it's heartening to see everyone else FINALLY glomming onto the fact that this is the possibly the single finest television series yet made. Hyperbole you say? For once it is not. As good as The Sopranos is, that other HBO stablemate looks like a cartoon next to this modern masterpiece. Now, having praised it in it's completeness it has to be said they slightly ... Read More

Although I enjoyed this film I'd have to say that an awful lot is sacrificed to DDL's acting. The fact that what everyone talks about is his performance says it all really. He is fantastic, but that's largely due to the fact that nobody else seems to get a word in edgeways.Paul Dano does his best, but like every other character he pops in and out of the film without any great rhyme or reason. There are a few faults, like other reviewers, I was confused for a long time by Dano playing identical twin brothers and there are other elements of the film that are confusing.Dano's congregation grows without the town ever seeming to, and the religous elements are only introduced in short, sharp bursts. But none of this really matters because the film is really about DDL's ... Read More

Loved this movie - reminiscent of the old British bank robbery films - Jason was great not overacting and trying to be the movie equivalent of Phil Mitchell. Great cast, and as a Brit living abroad the location scenes were great, good story that wasn't just about robbing a bank.

The central premise of this series is rather weak (ie that a young lawyer is employed by a highly successful law firm just because she knows someone central to a big case) but, as with the first series of 24, the first half of this series is a thrill ride. The makers have used a clever plot device whereby most of the action takes place in retrospect but every now and then the action switches to the present day (filmed in a dark and grainy style) leaving you hungry to see how the characters end up as they do. But, as with the first series of 24, as the series progresses the twists and turns become more and more rediculous and harder and harder to accept until by the very end you really don't care what happens as long as it happens quickly.

There are so many films that capitalise on the whole anti-corporation theme in Hollywood - ironically a huge corporate entity in its own right. It's difficult therefore to make a neutral judgement on a film that highlights the corruption of a corporation, that highlights the lengths some corporations go to protect themselves. Unfortunately this film isn't quite sure how it wants to approach the issue. Somewhere in the film there's a line George Clooney utters at Tom Wilkinson, "you're making it too easy for them". In some ways this captures the central problem of the film. The Tom Wilkinson character, responsible for defending a large-scale corporation against a civil action suit, begins to crack up and - tragically makes it too easy to dismiss him and his feelings ... Love Wire in the Blood. Think it's really intelligent, makes you pay attention. Tony Hill is an amazing character.
I'm just wondering why the Texas episode Prayer of the Bone was not included in the DVD, copyright? And could you get it somehow, or would you have to have an American DVD-player?

Quite simply, this is the worst film I have seen in a long time.

I was excited to see this movie, which is the worst part- I thought the cast was fairly strong and the adverts made it look pretty good. What I saw instead was a garbled mess of a movie, with incredibly boring dialogue, a mystery resolved in a very bleak, bizarre way, and perhaps the most ridiculous 'romantic' moment of the past few years (involving fresh spaghetti being spilt over a pair of breasts). The plot is non-sensical and filled with holes upon retrospect, and all in all there really is nothing redeeming about this film. I strongly advise you avoid it.

This last (half) series of the finest TV show ever made is actually one of its best (semi) seasons, so it makes some sense to review this masterwork from the (hopefully now spoiler-proof) end. The Sopranos finishes, indeed, as wonderfully as it began and carried on: constantly complimenting the viewer's intelligence, right up to the bitter-sweet dénouement.

Yes, the penultimate episode is the proper narrative/dramatic "end," with its stunningly-staged assassination of Baccala and the calamitous (and, typically of the show, almost hilarious) near-fatal wounding of Silvio (to the sound of Nat King Cole, the sight of naked Bing bystanders and with hideous collateral damage to a passing motorcyclist).

But the actual finale itself had to, er, not happen; in ... Read More
