An excellent plot line, side-splitting one-liners and brilliant acting. Enjoyable for all ages, heart warming and emotional, I don't think I will ever tire of this film.

3.Paul And Pauline Calf's Video Diaries [1994] starring: Steve Coogan, Patrick Marber, John Thomson

VHS : Paul And Pauline Calf's Video Diaries [1994]
Absolutely hilarious depiction of Manc lad Paul Calf, with his Chuck Norris haircut and total inability to function as a respectable citizen. Meet his mate Fat Bob, sister Pauline Lulu Calf, and two appearances by playwright Patrick Marber, as Roland the student and Spiros ("like a Greek god, only fatter and with a tache"). Very funny scripts and set-ups, this is a character Coogan ought to revive (Calf in his 40s, still on benefits despite getting four numbers once at the lottery?). One grumble - why isn't this on DVD yet? - my VHS is getting worn out.

4.The Two Ronnies - By The Sea / The Picnic [1982] starring: Ronnie Corbett, Ronnie Barker

VHS : Blott On The Landscape [1985]
At the time of writing this, sadly, this classic and popular comedy drama from the 80's is unavailable on DVD. The dramatisation closely follows Tom Sharpe's excellent book. Ignore the fact that local authority planning doesn't work according to he story, as the plot thickens with every scene, and it's so very very amusing. David Suchet excels as Blott, Geraldine James glows as Lady Maud and George Cole makes an adequate Sir Giles and it's amusing to see Julia McKenzie in a catsuit.

It comes as a two part video set, each episode being around 3 hours long. Watch and enjoy the raunchy fun.

6.Dancin' Thru The Dark [1989] starring: Ben Murphy (II), Con O'Neill, Peter Beckett, Julian Littman, Gary Moglione

VHS : Dancin' Thru The Dark [1989]
This film is an absolute gem that never dates. I could rave on about it for hours but I will try not to and attempt to provide a review that gives a balanced account of it.

I first saw this on tv. It was up against Fatal Attraction on another channel and I had to choose which to 'watch' and which to record for later. At the very last minute I changed my mind from recording FA and decided I would tape 'Dancin' thru the Dark' instead. Well..... it was the best decision I have EVER made!!! I couldn't even try to count how many times I have watched it over the years.

The story of Linda (Claire Hackett) & Peter (Con O'Neill) is one of first loves, peer pressure & life in the North of England.

Peter & Linda were a ... Read More

8.Boys From The Blackstuff - Part One [1982] starring: Michael Angelis, Paul Barber, Gary Bleasdale, Tamana Bleasdale, Jamie Bleasdale

VHS : Boys From The Blackstuff - Part One [1982]
Bleasdale captured the working class despair of the early Thatcher years. He makes us cry and laugh from one minute to the next. Superb performances by an exceptional cast of British actors push this powerful script to even greater heights. Angelis and Hill prove their worth with performances that are rich, deep and exhausting to watch. 'Boys From The Blackstuff' is a wonderful monument to the dreams of hope that Bleasdale leaves you with.

9.Belleville Rendez-vous [2003] starring: Mari-Lou Gauthier, Lina Boudreau, Béatrice Bonifassi, Michel Robin, Michèle Caucheteux

VHS : Belleville Rendez-vous [2003]
Whatever else anyone likes or hates about this fmin, its the small details that really make it work.
The very weird music hall scene with the Triplets - featuring Django Reinhardt (the guitarist playing with his foot), Josephine Baker getting attacked by monkeys after the bananas, and Fred Astaire getting eaten by his own tap shoes, for one.
Next, the passage of time, with the sudden appearance of the railway bridge, pushing Madame Souza's house aside.
Then there is the impossibly steep road Champion cycles up, followed by Grandma on his old trike.
The massive ocean liner - straight from an art-deco poster with its sleek and stretched lines.

VHS : Monte Carlo or Bust [1969]
Peter Cook and Dudley Moore are only two of the galaxy of stars who all have great parts in this classic 60's comedy about the famous car rally across Europe. Tony Curtis, Terry Thomas, Eric Sykes, Susan Hampshire and Gert Frobel all have dirty tricks up their sleeves to be first across the line as they face the hazards of the frozen North, the Alps etc. "Pete n' Dud" appear as two maniac Army officers in what is my favourite of all their performances. This film is the real story of the 60's cartoon serial "The Wacky Races" and you will recognise the Dick Dastardly character immediately as Terry Thomas (and Eric Sykes, the sneaky butler who translates brilliantly as "Mutley, The Snickering Hound" in "The Wacky Races"!) The media coverage of the race ... Read More
