VHS : Middlemarch [1994]
I saw this when it was originally broadcast in 1994, and was pleased to see it available on DVD; have just finished watching it over a period of a couple of weeks.

Let's get one thing straight -- no televised drama could convey the sheer scope and humanity of George Eliot's masterpiece. But this must be as close as it gets, and it's wonderful drama. My husband is not a fan of peiod drama at all, hasn't read the book, and he was riveted.

The locations are beautifully done, and the casting is simply perfect -- there is not a single disappointment there. This time around, I was even more impressed by Douglas Hodge as Lydgate -- you really feel his anguish and frustration as he is simultaneously baffled, infuriated, and ... Read More

I love the Prisoner of Azkaban.I totally don't have anything I don't like about it. My favourite bit is when Marge blew up like a great big balloon .Hagrids garden has changed in the Prisoner of Azkaban. I'm aged 7 (seven)

VHS : Brief Encounter [1945]
This is certainly an interesting view of the past. Amazing accents, strange attitudes to honour and duty, smouldering passion and eccentric approaches to hygiene (dropped some cakes on the floor? pick them up and sell them!). The filming is great and the acting, though patchy at times, is generally very believable. Only the extensive voice-over and inevitable lengthy shots of a thoughtful Celia got in the way of my enjoyment. A worthy classic!

By the way, the reported length is wrong - the main feature is just over 82 minutes, not 107.

VHS : The Shape Challenge 2 - Rapid Inch Reduction [1993]
I have been doing the shape challenge for a while, and I think the Shape challenge 2, is much much better. The exercises are more challenging, so you don't get bored so easily, and there are harder and easier versions, so there is always an excercise for your level of fitness.

VHS : Drowning By Numbers [1988]
Greenaway's films are always watchable for the cinematography, but in this one you can actually follow the story too. The plot is fairly simple but is padded out with descriptions of peculiar games that Madgett, the Suffolk coroner, and his strange son Smut invent to pass the time. Smut also celebrates any violent death (whether roadkill or drowned husbands) by painting a number at the scene and letting off fireworks. Yellow paint for Tuesdays, red paint for Saturdays (Tuesday is winning, being the best day for violent deaths). You can also try to count the ascending numbers from 1-100 that are placed in each scene. I only saw about half of them - some are well hidden.

There isn't a DVD version of the film available in the UK at the moment, but ... Read More

VHS : Doctor Who - Kinda [1982]
Written by Buddhist Christopher Bailey, Kinda is one of the most interesting stories of the fifth Doctor era. It is steeped in ideas concerning culture, how different races react to each other, and how people become frightened of ideals they can not understand. Clearly as well the story is also influenced by historical events, the arrival of explorers in the third worlds.
In this case an Earth expedition force is sent to a tropical Planet to report on whether the Planet is fit to colonise. However the crew gradually become unhinged by the influence of the Planets natives, and the evil snake The Mara which also affects the mind of regular companion Tegan.
At this stage in the programmes history, the series had three regular companions travelling with The Doctor. ... Read More
