| Like other "potager" books (formal, French-style kitchen gardens), this has beautiful photos of gardens artistically planted in geometric designs, which are unrealistic for those of us without at least fairly large properties and larger bank accounts. It also has the best-researched history, which is interesting in itself and will give you fodder for entertaining conversation. The unexpected bonus that sets this one apart from the others is that it's useful, too, because there are many detailed how-to charts, designs, and lists. These are particularly for those who live in the Midwest (Zone 5 and adjacent), as the author does. | I am a horticulturist and wanted a book to research a Provencal garden I wanted to design for a client. I was leary because there were many books and I was not sure which one would be good. I made a great pick. The pictures are great and provided me with lots of ideas. The author knows a lot about gardens and specifically design. I highly recommend to anyone that wants to creat a garden with high design and a great spiritual feel. |

| this book is a cultural treasure, but then i am a long-time admirer of russell page, his sensitivity to site and his knowledge as a plantsman. while he tried to make good garden design accessible to more people conceptually, aesthetically, and financially, there remain some recommendations that are clearly out of reach of the ordinary person. however, his approach can be adapted to any any size of garden and any budget. recommended for its beautiful prose alone, i will read this book again and again for its depth of understanding of all aspects of garden design. |

| This is a good book to read before your trip & decide where to go, much too big to travel with. Well written, informative, but could use a few more photos-these are gardens after all. |

| I loved the earlier book on Highgrove and gave it the highest review. It's interesting to see this updated version, complete with delightful pictures of Charles and Camilla looking relaxed and happy. This book translates well for even the "small yard" gardener as there are a lot of tips. It is admitted that the Highgrove grass isn't really grass at all--just a wildflower meadow that's very closely clipped. It isn't fertilized or watered either (though the pictures don't show that--it would have been helpful and inspiration for the book to come clean by showing us the royal dried up lawn during a (rarely) hot English summer.) This book also is fun to compare to the earlier book, where one can see some of the new plantings (including the black and white garden) ... Read More |

| Of the too many gardening books I've purchased, this one has transformed me. It opened my eyes to plant groupings that are natural (often native) and pleasing the year round. The illustrations are very beautiful and really do convey what Kingsbury describes. There is also plenty of useful data to help identify the plants that suit each environment. I bought this years ago and continue to return to it for both inspiration and information. |

| Althought the photos are beautiful and the book does give some overview of the work of some prominent designers in the field today, the advice given is very basic. It's sort of on the line of "create an axis" kind of advice. Still, it's a pretty coffee table book, and something to look at when inspiration is lacking, or a winter dreaming book. |
