I bought this book searching for a new way to garden, The soil where I live is poor mostly clay and huge rocks! It was wearing me out. I gave up 5 years ago and just grew container tomatoes and flowers. I found wood, four 6 foot planks for 20 bucks at lumber store. (on clearance). I bought some angles and put them together. I followed the directions most of the time but I found culivated soil already prepared at a reasonable price.
I planted squash, cukes, carrots, peppers, beans and melons, mustard and collard greens. That was in April. Now it's August and I am harvesting squash, cukes, greens, and peppers. The green beans and the carrots and melon have not fared well. But I think I planted them wrong The squash took over everything ... Read More

I just ordered this book today so I can't comment on it per se. However I met Tim in November of '06 and spent about a week with him at an Agriturisimo in Cortona, Italy and can say he was a wonderfully laid back, knowledgable and articulate character who had just had his first article printed in Gourmet Magazine. He also has a number of blogs on Gourmet's Epicurious site and has a very entertaining article in the newest issue of Gourmet itself about manning his pepper stand at the farmers' market. Without even seeing it I am sure "Heirloom" is well worth the read. I believe he's been writing even longer than he's been farming.

I would give this book zero stars if I could. I am so surprised this book has such high ratings. First, the author can not stop himself from talking down to his readers, and making himself appear as he is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Half the book is about how great he is and how "Everybody Else" is stupid and worthless. This is the most negative book on gardening I have ever read. I do not recommend this book at all.

Amy Goldman so captures the magic of heirloom tomatoes the reader almost inhales that distinct summer fragrance with every turn of the page. Each tomato has a carefully researched history and sometimes even a romance shared with the reader. I especially value the detailed notes on each variety for sweetness, flavor, texture and general growing information.
Victor Schrager's tomato photographs are extraordinary and used lavishly throughout the book. This is a book to share and show every friend who gardens or enjoys good food. And, yes, there are some fine recipes included.

I have gotten so much use out of this book, even long before trying to save seeds. It is very detailed and a wonderful resource of information on various veggies (also includes some other plants). When choosing what seeds to order for my garden, this book was constantly at my side. Now, I am confident in its clearness, user friendly style, and wealth of information and am ready to make saving garden seed a regular gardening task. Very happy with this book!

Highly useful book, and a future edition that contained a few corrections and clarifications would be just about perfect.

The author mentions companion planting without discussing mechanisms, which makes typos hard to decipher. The "Artichoke" page states that tarragon is a good companion to artichokes, but the "Tarragon" page states that artichokes are a BAD companion to tarragon. Which is it?

The author also instructs novice tomato growers to remove all "nonflowering stems that grow between the main stem and the leaf crotches." What does this mean?! All stems will flower eventually...
(Of course pruning is controversial anyway... some gardeners claim that the complexity of tomato flavor depends upon lush foliage.)

It's nice to have the combination of someone so well researched who is simultaneously an excellent practitioner. Lots of great ideas about transplanting (I hadn't heard of soil blocks before). Many great tool recommendations as well. This is worth the time and money!

In my honest opinion, this is the best how to garden book out there. Probably not for beginners, but for those who want more. It debunks the normal vegetable spacing on the seed packets, so you can get more that you can imagine......

i checked this book out from the library, and let my neighbor borrow it. she liked it so much didn't want to give it back. as soon as i started reading it, i understood why. it's very approachable, and has lots of crucial information for first-year and experienced gardeners alike. and it's got nice pictures and clear diagrams. i really like the "top crops and how to grow them" section.
so i bought my own copy, and i've been showing it to everyone who stops by to see my veggies. i like her "messy-looking" technique of interplanting all different kinds of vegetables. altho i should have paid more attention to how far apart to plant seeds, i had a veritable tomato forest under my squashes.
i bought another copy for my stepmom, and she loved it. she's a top notch gardener. ... Read More
